If I’m An Artist, why do I need a Music Publisher?

As artists we often believe that creating music, rehearsing with our band, composing new songs and playing gigs is all we have to do. However, this is only part of what a complete artist must do to have a financially viable and successful career.

It is extremely important that as artists we understand our industry, our rights, collective management organizations and, above all, that we know the roles that make up the industry and the companies that can help us enhance our artistic career.

A ramp for artists: Music Publishers

One of the companies that can be a catalyst for artists are music publishers or Publishers. These companies are in the business of administering the rights to their artists’ musical works, registering them with collective copyright management organizations, and monitoring what happens to those works around the world. Other functions a publisher performs include:

– Manage the synchronization licenses, which allow us to place our musical works in movies, series, video games and any audiovisual production.

– Manage any legal aspect with the authors and their musical works.

– Manage licenses to re-record covers.

– Promote the catalog by all possible means, which allows us, as artists, to get more visualization from different audiences.

– Register, monitor the works and make the corresponding royalty claims in relation to their uses, and of course, make the corresponding payments to the authors according to the agreement.

A publishing house strengthens and enhances our career:

In short, if I am an artist I need a publishing house for several reasons:

  1. a publisher helps us register our works with collective management organizations, which allows us to collect all that our music generates.

2. The publisher is constantly looking for opportunities for its artists, from sync licensing to collaborations with other artists, which translates into growth and positioning opportunities for us, as artists.

3. The publishing house can provide us with different types of advice, for example, the A&R department can advise us from a marketing and musical point of view, generating strategies so that we can grow in social networks and streaming platforms. The legal department can advise us with any contract or conflict we may have. And likewise, the administrative department can advise us with all aspects related to the registration of our works and a better understanding of copyrights.

4. The publishing house promotes its catalog through different media, which translates into promotion for us as artists.

5. Being signed with a publisher allows us to focus more on our music, with the assurance that a company is working for our growth as artists on the legal, marketing and administrative side.
